Primera Conferencia de Mujeres

June 17th, 2006 (09:39 pm)

It is so amazing to me how much my former "little kids" have grown so much in 5 years! Today I helped a friend of mine with the first Hispanic Women's Conference, done at First Baptist Church in collaboration with the former Iglesia Comunidad de Cristo (I forget their new name) and a few other churches. Due to some unforseen rules/policies of the host church, the children (no younger than Kindergarten) had to be transported to First Wesleyan, where all the children's activities were. I travelled between the two churches, helping lead worship at the beginning of the conference, then helping with the children's activities at First Wesleyan. It was so much fun and such hard work! But the absolute best part was that I got to see some of the kids that I have not seen in a very loooooooong time--some as long as 5 years! A couple of them were my students when I was student teaching last year, and some were just kids I watched grow up at Iglesia. And ALL of them speak perfect English now, no accent. These are kids that did not speak a word of English when I last saw them! As soon as they hit school....boom!...English!

Studying organic chem this summer....trying to knock it out now so the class in the fall won't be as tough. I need to be able to focus on the biology classes.

Done. Finally.

Cell biology, genetics, human anatomy (and lab), ecology, and organic chemistry. That's 16 hours of sciences. Like I said on theFace, I'll either love it, or I'll smash my head with those $100 textbooks.

My "advisor" is great. (I put "advisor" in quotes because apparently he is only my acting advisor. I don't have a real advisor yet. But it's not like I have a lot to choose from. I think I know....) I was nervous, since I had heard some not-so-great things a long time ago....but from some not-so-reliable sources. Can't always trust those rumors though, can we?
